Tiffany Altar Restored at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church
Just in time for the Christmas season, the historic Tiffany Altar at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, across from The Green in Wellsboro, has been beautifully restored!
Dedicated in 1914 and given by Horace Packer in memory of his parents, the altar sustained damage in December 2022 when part of the marble on its side fell. The Rambusch firm of Jersey City, NJ, a fourth-generation company with ties to St. Paul’s since its construction in the late 1800s, was entrusted with the repair.
The marble, sourced from the same Italian quarry as the original, was meticulously color-matched by an artist at the Rambusch studios to seamlessly blend with the existing design.
This $71,400 project was made possible through grants from the Packer Foundation and the Etner Foundation, along with generous contributions from the St. Paul’s Altar Guild, parish members, and friends.
St. Paul’s is one of the rare “Totally Integrated Church Buildings,” with much of its interior and stained glass windows designed by L.C. Tiffany himself.
